St Mary's Hospital/Hammersmith Hospital
Art Collection Assistant

Are you looking for a way to use your arts background in a voluntary capacity? Could you help us look after our museum accredited hospital art collection?

We are looking to appoint two volunteers to join our hospital Arts Team, for two days per week, for a minimum six month commitment. Our Arts Volunteers will assist with general administration of the Hospitals Art Collection, including managing our inventory and updating our arts database.

Location: Hammersmith Hospital, London, W12 0HS and St Mary’s Hospital, London, W2 1NY

Hours: Ideally we are looking for an individual who can commit to volunteering for at least two days a week.

Commitment: Six months (but you can volunteer for longer if you would like to)

Art in our hospitals

The benefits of art in the clinical environment are widely recognised: supporting and sustaining the healing process and playing an important part in making the medical environment less stressful for all. The collection focuses on 20th Century and contemporary British art.  We commission and collect many different works of art including sculptures, paintings, video installations, prints and original works on paper.  Our aim is to display these in public areas, clinical units and outdoors in order to enhance and uplift what can be sterile and intimidating hospital surroundings.  We have a passion for working with emerging artists on projects and installations and have many established artists represented in the collection.  We are proud to have collaborated with, amongst others: Nigel Hall, Paul Huxley, Tess Jaray, David Mach, Julian Opie, Bridget Riley, Alison Turnbull, John Virtue and Kate Whiteford.

In September 2016 we became the sole working hospital to be granted museum status, following accreditation from Arts Council England. We’re incredibly grateful to the volunteers who helped us achieve this.

This volunteer role will enable you to develop experience working with an extensive arts collection that serves a worthwhile purpose to help improve the experience for patients within our hospitals. This role will provide an excellent insight into managing an arts collection, not only within a hospital environment but across multiple sites and a wide range of different mediums.

This is a great volunteer opportunity for an individual with excellent communication skills, a relevant qualification and some existing experience working with museum collections to learn a range of workplace and arts sector skills as well as join a small team of dedicated staff who are determined to make a difference to patient experience. The role will be challenging but rewarding, varying from day to day and offers an exciting opportunity to gain experience in the arts sector.

Main Contact: Lucy Zacaria, Head of Arts
Expenses: Up to £6 per day for travel, and up to £4 for lunch/refreshments, in accordance with our Volunteer Expenses Policy

What will you get out of volunteering with us?

  • A fun experience as part of a friendly and committed team
  • A dedicated member of staff at the charity who will support you in your role
