A large tiled work by Clare Woods has been created for the newly-refurbished Outpatients department at Hammersmith Hospital. Adapted from an original painting by Woods, Mistaken Point (2011), the work is based on the Yorkshire landscape of Ilkley Moor and the rock formations at Briham Rocks, near Harrogate.
The idea behind commissioning a tiled work by Clare Woods was to create a link between the past and present in our art collection. On display at Charing Cross Hospital are six Victorian wall tile panels by Maw & Co of Jackfield which were rescued from the hospital’s original building on the Strand in 1979. Woods’ original painting was digitally translated onto glaze transfers and fired onto tile by Craven Dunnill Jackfield Ltd, who are based at the historic factory.
