Imperial Health Charity is delighted to present Flows, a new commission in collaboration with artist and printmaker Frea Buckler.

In 2020, Frea was commissioned to transform the look and feel of the refurbished PET CT unit in Charing Cross Hospital’s imaging department. The aim of the commission was to create a welcoming, calming and reassuring space for patients and staff.
Her work, titled Flows, takes inspiration from the outside world by incorporating a natural colour palette and smooth shapes which seamlessly weave across the artwork.
Compiling a colour scheme for the whole space—from wall colours to cladding—Frea took inspiration from the natural world. Sage greens and sea blues ripple alongside flashes of vibrant coral and sunflower yellow.

The colour combinations have been carried throughout the space, peaking in the murals in the corridors and the scanning room itself. As well as the tonal differences on the walls themselves, there are a number of bespoke prints hung in the cubicles. This is to provide some quieter more reflective moments for those using these smaller private areas.
About the project, Frea says: "It was a pleasure and privilege to work on this commission, balancing my own creative vision with the needs of the patients and staff that will use the department. Mostly I hope it provides some sense of comfort and a feeling that someone has been thinking about them and their experience of the space. Thank you to all who helped and enabled this commission to take shape."
