Imperial Health Charity is pleased to present Sailing Down The Backwaters, by London-based artist Nadia Attura.

Imperial Health Charity worked together with Cath Lab staff to select an artist for this commission who could think about the particular needs of this space, and produce a  harmonious, sensitive collection of artworks to enhance the environment.

Nadia visited the Cath Lab and spoke with staff to understand their ambitions for the unit. She wanted to create a group of artworks that would engage and intrigue the viewer, whilst also convey a sense of tranquility and escapism. The lush, fantastical landscapes you can see here have been produced especially for the Cath Lab department.

This series of work is from Nadia’s Backwaters collection. Drifting down tropical backwaters, past palm fringed riverbanks, filled with birdsong and jungle calls. Verdant vintage inspired artworks from the backwaters of Sri Lanka, Mexico, Brazil, with added nature from Morocco, The Philippines, Spain, Italy, USA and the gardens of Kew, London. Watching the world in  green and gold.

Using her own analogue and digital photography, Nadia builds these compositions of imagined vistas digitally, as well as overlaying hand-drawn elements to create scenes of another world. The images become multifaceted tableaux, combining unexpected objects, settings and colours to construct uncanny depictions of desirable destinations. A journey into idealism and paradise, Nadia applies washes, paints, ink and chalk onto the final works.
