Imperial Health Charity and the Responsa Foundation are pleased to present This Homeland, a new exhibition of works by over 30 artists.

What does ‘homeland’ mean to you?

This is the question the Responsa Foundation asked artists to consider for an open call exhibition. Imperial Health Charity partnered with Responsa to choose a group of works from over 400 submissions which we felt offered interesting takes on notions of homeland and belonging.

The concept of ‘homeland’ is different for everyone. For many, it will simply conjure up an image of the place where they grew up. Beyond that, however, the word homeland can carry with it countless memories and emotions.

Whether it’s a family recipe that evokes the nostalgia of childhood, the keepsakes and trinkets passed down between generations that we proudly display to visitors,  or the sound of the front door closing, shutting off the outside world and signifying the end of the day — all of these can comprise what it means to feel truly at home.

The mediums through which each participant explores this concept—everything from print, painting, and ceramics to film and photography—are as varied as the places which they call home. Alongside their artwork, each artist has contributed a short text or poem reflecting on their unique perspective.
