Every day, thousands of NHS staff walk many miles while caring for patients in our hospitals. The average 12-hour shift sees staff walk 6.5 miles a day – that’s around 13,500 steps - with many covering even longer distances.

In July, we’re inviting everyone to experience a taste of what our incredible NHS staff do every day – by walking in their shoes to raise money for Imperial Health Charity.

This is a brand-new virtual fundraising event – so you can take part at your own pace and in your own time.

How does it work?

Pick how many days of the month you’d like to ‘walk in their shoes’ and calculate how far you’d have to walk to match them. For example, if you choose to take on seven days, multiply that by 6.5 and you’ll need to walk 45.5 miles to cover the same distance as the average frontline NHS worker.

You can take on this challenge at your own pace and with friends or family, but please stay safe and make sure you follow the latest government guidelines.

All the money you raise will go towards the hospital, ward or department of your choice and we will be on hand to offer fundraising advice and support every step of the way.

Participants will also receive their own medal after they cross the finish line. Simply track your distance, send us a picture of your completed challenge and we’ll send the medal in the post!

What is the event?

This event is a brand-new virtual challenge. You can take part at your own pace and in your own time. Pick how many days you’d like to walk and ask your friends, family and colleagues to donate via your fundraising page.
This event is all about  thanking our fantastic NHS staff by experiencing a taste of what they do every day and helping to raise vital funds to support their work.

Where is the event taking place?

This is a virtual event, which means  you can take place anywhere you choose. Whether that be your house, back garden or local park - the choice is up to you!

How do I register?

You can sign up to the event here. Once you register, a member of our team will be in touch to introduce themselves, give you some more information about the event and let you know how you can set up your fundraising page.

Is there a deadline to register by?

You can sign up to this event any time throughout July. The registration form will close on 31 July.

How do I track my progress?

You can track your progress through any tool that is accessible to you. It may be a pedometer, through your phone or using the Strava app through which you will be able to post your progress onto your JustGiving page.

Is there an age limit?

No, everyone is welcome! All we ask is that children are accompanied by an adult when completing the challenge at all times.

How do I let you know once I have completed it?

Once you have completed your challenge please get in touch with us by emailing fundraising@imperialcharity.org.uk. If you forget to let us know, we will also be in touch at the end of the month to see how you got on!

How/when will I get my medal?

You will receive your medal once you have completed your challenge and the event finishes at the end of July. Donations can come in up to four weeks after the event, at which point we will send you your medal and let you know how much you have raised!

Where does the registration money go?

The registration money and any money that you choose to donate at the registration checkout will go towards helping our hospitals do more – this includes funding major redevelopments to hospital buildings, paying for additional medical equipment and supporting ground-breaking research.

Where will my fundraising money go?

The hospital, ward or department of your choice. If you don't have a preference for where you'd like the money you raise to go, we'll make sure it goes to wherever the need is greatest.

How much do I need to raise and how do I get the money to you?

There is no minimum sponsorship for the event. However, if you don’t know how much money you would like to try and raise, we suggest aiming for a target of £75. You can get the money to us either through your fundraising page, by sending us a cheque or via a bank transfer.
