Patient Hardship Fund

What is the Patient Hardship Fund?

The Patient Hardship Fund supports patients and families facing sudden and unexpected financial pressures as a direct result of their time in hospital.

Responding quickly in an emergency situation, we award grants of up to £1,500 to support patients and their loved ones when they are in urgent need.

These grants have previously been awarded to those who:

  • are unable to cover transport, accommodation, food and clothing costs while supporting loved ones during their time in hospital
  • require urgent support following a major disaster which has resulted in hospital care
  • face unexpected funeral costs after the sudden death of a family member in hospital.

Family Liaison Nurses Helen Avila and Jo Williams are the first port of call for families of sick children at St Mary’s Hospital, providing a pillar of support and offering practical and financial assistance throughout.

Helen and Jo rely on the Dresden Hardship Fund to secure emergency grants, extending a lifeline to families in their hour of need.

“It is every parent’s worst nightmare to have their child in intensive care,” said Jo.

“But to then have to worry about money on top of that is almost unthinkable. When you can take away some of that burden, it helps to lighten the load.”

Your support will boost the Dresden Hardship Fund and enable us to provide financial help to many  more patients and their families when they need it most.
