A new look for St Mary's Paediatric Allergy Unit
A new look for St Mary's Paediatric Allergy Unit
26 February 2026
Our arts team worked with artist Melanie Smith to create a colourful vinyl installation, inviting children to explore their senses through an illustrated map called 'Imagination Island'.
The island is dotted with wild forests, secret camps and mysterious coves alongside questions and prompts to help distract patients while they receive treatment.
On the ceiling above, we installed overhead light panels which show scenes of blue sky and blossoming trees, bringing a feeling of the outside into the unit.
We’ve also introduced a dedicated teen area, complete with a bifold screen and desk where young people spending long hours on the unit can finish homework or have some quiet time.
This space features a special artwork in memory of Children’s Allergy Nurse Eliana Leitao, created by Rhian Sutcliffe in response to a series of conversations with the Paediatric Allergy team.
The artwork references imagery associated with Eliana: a rising phoenix, echoes of Portuguese ceramic tiles, her love of butterflies and sunshine.
The refurbished space is a huge improvement, improving the wellbeing of both patients and staff who use the space regularly.
Families have told us how much they appreciate the extra space, the artwork, and the abundance of toys now available:
"The play area and available toys are numerous, clean and super fun, and the whole team is caring and lovely."
Thank you for your generous donations which have made this possible.
If you would like to help us transform spaces across our hospitals please support one of our current fundraising appeals.
