Volunteering programme recognised with ‘Investing in Volunteers’ status
Our hospital volunteering programme has been recognised by leading figures in the charity sector for setting the highest standards in volunteer management.

Following an assessment process over the summer, we were awarded the prestigious ‘Investing in Volunteers’ accreditation.

The special status reflects our commitment to providing a fantastic experience for everyone who devotes their time to volunteer in our hospitals.

We first received the highly-regarded accreditation in 2019 and are required to be re-assessed every three years.

In passing the assessment, we were praised for setting excellent standards in several key areas, including our clear focus on volunteering roles that improve the patient and visitor experience, our training programme for volunteers and NHS staff, and our commitment to valuing and supporting volunteers throughout their journey with us.

“I’m delighted that our ‘Investing in Volunteers’ status has been renewed for another three years,” said Chris Neal, our Head of Volunteering.

“It is testament to the extraordinary efforts of all our volunteers, who make an enormous impact every day at our hospitals, as well as our fantastic staff team, who work tirelessly to ensure volunteers have the best possible experience with us.”

Between April 2021 and March 2022, 547 volunteers gave their time to help our hospitals, contributing over 17,000 hours in total. They completed more than 6,000 shifts in that time, supporting 46 hospital departments and interacting with 45,000 patients and visitors.

Our annual survey revealed that 98% of NHS staff at Imperial College Healthcare feel the contribution made by volunteers helps to make their hospital a better place to work.
