How your support is helping our hospitals fight Covid-19
Thanks to your fantastic support, we’re continuing to help our hospitals during this extremely challenging period.

Right now there are over 400 patients being treated for Covid-19 in our hospitals – and your support has never been more important.

Here’s how your generous donations to our Covid-19 Relief Fund are being used to help staff and patients at our hospitals.

Supporting staff on the front line

Day and night, our heroic NHS staff are continuing to provide outstanding care for patients with Covid-19 despite the most challenging circumstances.

To help them through the toughest winter the NHS has ever seen, we want to make sure staff have access to the best possible mental health and wellbeing support.

That’s why we’ve awarded more than £450,000 to expand the counselling services available to staff. Since the start of the pandemic, more than 600 staff have accessed one-to-one support with over 3,000 attending emotional wellbeing group sessions.

Your support is also helping to improve the basic facilities that hospital staff use every day. More than £1.2 million has been committed to fund vital improvements to staff rooms, rest areas, changing rooms, shower rooms and kitchens as well as new communal spaces for staff to relax between shifts.

Enhancing care for patients

While our incredible NHS staff work around the clock to provide outstanding care, your support is enabling us to improve the hospital experience for patients during an extremely distressing time.

With visiting restrictions still in place, we’ve boosted the hospital WiFi and delivered over 120 tablet devices to help with ‘virtual visiting’. It means hundreds of patients can speak to their loved ones via video call from their hospital bed with a fast and reliable internet connection.

For those recovering from Covid-19 in our hospitals, we’ve also created special arts activity packs, creative resources and virtual workshops for patients to enjoy, and awarded emergency grants to families facing real financial difficulty as a result of the pandemic.

Playing our part in the vaccine programme

With your support we’ve been able to deploy dozens of our fantastic Crisis Response Volunteers to help with a range of important tasks in our hospitals.

Since the start of this year our volunteers have been helping to manage the vaccination programme for NHS staff, making sure healthcare workers have access to the jab as quickly as possible. Many more are stepping forward to help with other vital roles in our hospitals, including welcoming visitors and delivering lunches and dinners at mealtimes.

That’s on top of the extraordinary contribution made by our volunteers throughout last year. During the first wave, they helped us deliver more than 170,000 hot meals and run three pop-up shops for NHS staff.
