Volunteer Lauren’s 1,100-mile challenge for Charing Cross Hospital
Committed Crisis Response Volunteer Lauren McCormack took running to the next level in an ultimate challenge - raising over £1,500 for Charing Cross Hospital.

Lauren’s inspirational challenge involved running every day for a year, during which time she racked up an impressive 1,095 miles – or 1,763 km.

When Covid-19 hit in the spring of 2020, Lauren’s work as a freelance hair and makeup artist disappeared overnight. When she saw our call for Crisis Response Volunteers, she stepped up to help at Charing Cross Hospital.

Lauren said: “Volunteering was a rollercoaster – some days were really positive, others more challenging - but ultimately I felt proactive and that I was part of a team working to help and improve the situation we all found ourselves in.”

Lauren returned to work and struggled to find time to volunteer – but was passionate to find a unique way to continue supporting the hospital.

“I wanted to raise awareness - and some money - to try and help in a different way.”

“The work the charity does is really special,” she said. “I wanted to raise awareness - and some money - to try and help in a different way.”

Lauren challenged herself to run every single day for a year. She aimed to take on a minimum of 5k every day and never missed a session – even jogging round her garden when she tested positive for Covid-19!

Inspired by her volunteering experience, Lauren was committed to keeping fit and not taking her health for granted. By the time she finished her challenge in November 2021, Lauren had clocked up a running total of 200 hours.

"We never know when we might be in a position where our health is reliant on the NHS, and they deserve all the support they receive."

And how did Lauren feel about raising £1,500 for Charing Cross Hospital?

“I was so thrilled! I want to say a huge thank you to everyone that donated to such an amazing cause,” she said.

“Volunteering with Imperial Health Charity had really reminded me what a luxury it is to feel fit and healthy. We never know when we might be in a position where our health is reliant on the NHS, and they deserve all the support they receive.”
