At so many important moments in our lives, the NHS is by our side. It's there to welcome us into the world, heal us when we're sick and take care of us as we grow older. For so many of us, the NHS is part of our life story.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NHS, we asked some of our former patients and their loved ones to share their memories of incredible care and support at Imperial College Healthcare and their personal messages of gratitude to you - the amazing healthcare professionals who looked after them when they were most in need.
Here are just a few of the messages they shared with us ...
"I am currently receiving care at Hammersmith Hospital and the care has been outstanding. Not only from the medical and nursing staff but all the other staff that support them. I have been treated with dignity at all times and everyone has been exceptionally friendly. I also have a special connection with St Mary’s as this is where I did my nurse training and it brings back very happy memories now that I am retired."
"My husband has made more than 35 visits to the podiatry service at St Mary’s over the last year. During each visit, the care, compassion, support and treatment he received has been commendable. Everyone he came in contact with - starting from the reception, podiatrists and consulting team - was superb, kind, considerate and of course very patient. Despite the pain, he looked forward to his visits, in fact we both did. It seemed like a social outing for both of us. We equally appreciate the staff who made transport bookings and also the team that took care of us in the transport lounge. We salute you all, each and everyone of you, who was involved with his treatment and care during his visits."

"I was blown away with how professional, kind, attentive, understanding the staff at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust are. Now I see the NHS and its staff in a different way, with lots of gratitude and respect for what they do."
"I was at Queen Charlotte's & Chelsea when I was expecting my twins who are now 20 months old. The care I received was second to none. I am an older mum and from my first booking appointment until the day I left, I was treated impeccably and was monitored throughout. I had pre-eclampsia and had to spend a week in hospital before the birth. My c-section was a dream and I also had to stay a week after the birth due to my high blood pressure. I built a great rapport with midwives, doctors and consultants in this time and I have nothing but praise for them all. What could be a traumatic time for a new, older mum was made comfortable, safe and - dare I say - fun! Thank you for everything, NHS. My twin girls were brought into this world by nothing but love!"

"Words cannot describe how grateful I am towards Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital. My mother suffered from bowel cancer and she received exemplary treatment to the end. My father suffered from dementia and currently I have arthritis, which is being managed by the rheumatology team at Hammersmith. My twin sister was very lucky after she was admitted to the stroke unit during the Covid lockdown. I am grateful for all the support we have received and am very happy with the service we get. Thank you!"
"I have been under the care of Mr Guri Sandhu, his ENT team and the 10 South ward for over 10 years. The medical care from all of them has been phenomenal. Mr Guri Sandhu is the best surgeon I have ever known. He really listens to his patients, he cares and strives to do his absolute best for his patients. 10 South is a fantastic ward. I have been an inpatient many times over the past 10 years. The nursing staff really understand us patients beyond anything I have ever known in other hospitals. Whenever I am being admitted in for surgery it's like coming to visit a team of staff who feel like family."

"St Mary’s is the place that helped me have the baby I am carrying in my arms right now. I suffered from recurrent miscarriages until St Mary’s found out what the problem was and gave me the right treatment - something that even a private doctor wasn’t able to do. I had the best care, from conception to delivery and after care. Thank you so much. St Mary’s will always remain a special memory in my heart."
"I have been treated at Hammersmith Hospital since 2004 and the consultants, the nurses and everyone else working there have extended wonderful care and support all these years. They have saved me many times in severe health situations and I cannot thank them enough."

"I've had numerous, extensive treatments across a number of areas of Imperial since 2020 and I'm continually astonished at how straightforward and connected things have been - not just across your hospitals, but also with my MS treatment team at UCLH. The care I've received has been absolutely 5 star at every touchpoint, and I've felt so incredibly well looked after. As someone who is a big fan of art in hospitals I took so much from the works I was able to see across the sites. Museums and galleries were closed during lockdown, but I was sitting there having chemo, scans, surgery and other treatments surrounded by amazing artworks. It made such a phenomenal difference to how I felt about being so very ill."
"I can't thank and praise enough all my brilliant eye team for their extraordinary treatment. Knowledge, humility, kindness, truthfulness about becoming partially sighted. And their tolerence for answering all my questions."
"I have been a patient under many specialties at Imperial College Healthcare, at all of the hospitals, for over 20 years. The Trust is a huge part of my life, and the reason I’m still alive to write this. I have even tried to live in a different part of the country for a year (during the pandemic), but I felt lost without the support and safety of being looked after by Imperial. They are my hospital ‘family’, and I feel able to manage and cope with the challenges of my complex health issues, and therefore all other aspects of my life, due to the years of connection, relationship building, incredible people and care. There are some truly exceptional people. They are my heroes. Some are my friends. Many are among the most important in my life now. Thank you."

"I had TB in my lungs when I was in my teens and I had Covid-19 pneumonia in 2020. Both times I was given treatment at St Mary’s and the staff were amazing. I was looked after incredibly well. I will be forever grateful."
"My son was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease when he was eight weeks old. The care we received from all the doctors and nurses was out of this world. It is only because of the amazing work done by the doctors and nurses that our boy is so much better today. We don't have words to express the gratitude we feel for these angelic professionals."
"I had a bone marrow stem cell transplant at Hammersmith Hospital over Christmas 2020. I have genuinely never seen better teamwork, dedication or care for patients as I received while I was there. Everyone involved - medical, maintenance, catering - was just brilliant and I will be forever grateful to them."

"I was given a heart valve repair operation over the Easter weekend in 2021 and was in hospital for six nights. I received excellent care and the operation was a complete success. The staff were absolutely wonderful and I always felt that the level of care I received was superb."
"I and my family have been connected to Charing Cross Hospital for over 30 years - from A&E visits with children and my husband to cancer treatment for me, as well as long term help for my hearing loss. Charing Cross Hospital is a part of our family, a reassuring presence adding immeasurably to our sense of safety in times of trouble."
"I am currently receiving care from Dr Saira Hameed and her team in the bariatric department. This care has been exemplary and life-changing. I cannot overstate how impressed I have been with every aspect of my treatment, and especially with Dr Hameed, who is simply extraordinary - both in her skills as a doctor and in the depth of her empathy for patients."

"I have always received outstanding patient service from Queen Charlotte's & Chelsea Hospital, both as an inpatient and an outpatient. The staff have always been professional, kind and caring, and this was really important when I was recently referred to the Rapid Access Team in gynaecology by my GP for suspected endometrial cancer. The whole process went really well and I felt in safe hands all the time. I cannot thank the staff enough for looking after me during a difficult and really emotional time."
"I received outstanding care at Charing Cross Hospital for my cancer and other routine check-ups. You would have thought I was the only patient in the hospital. They thought of everything. My oncologist was the best. I feel very blessed. Thank you."
"I have been a patient for the past six years. I was under the care of the gastro team and would stay at Almroth Wright ward for months at a time. Every nurse was outstanding. The lead nurse for vascular access, Jan Hitchcock, was a life saver. Allison Wright, Clinical Nurse Specialist for nutrition, is the very best. Marianna Nsalambi and Magda Laban were my lifeline when ill on the ward. I owe them my life."
