DBS FAQ

Do I have to pay for a DBS Check?

No, there is no cost for you, we cover all associated costs.

I already have a DBS certificate, can I use this?

We are unable to accept previously submitted DBS checks and require all new volunteers to complete a new DBS check with us before starting with us.

Can I use the DBS update service?

No, we do not use the DBS update Service.

Will I need to repeat the DBS check?

All our volunteering roles require a DBS check, as part of our commitment to safer recruitment.

We will complete a new DBS application:

  • For all volunteering roles, we do not accept existing DBS certificates or the DBS update service
  • Every 3 years
  • If a volunteer has not volunteered with us in the past 6 months

You may need a new DBS check if you change roles whilst volunteering with us.

How long does the DBS check take?

It usually takes around 15-20 minutes to complete the DBS check application.

Typically the DBS check is completed within a week however it can take up to 8 weeks. The timing is out of our control so we are ask for your patience here.

My DBS will contain information on it, what should I do?

Having a criminal record does not necessarily prevent you from volunteering with us. It is important that you are honest with us, and we will keep your information confidential.

We will ask you for information of what is contained and we will review this information and a decision will be made as to your suitability to volunteer.

If during your time volunteering with us, your circumstances changes in a way that might affect your DBS disclosure, you must inform us right away.

I don’t have three documents, what can I do?

If you are 16-19 years old, and in full time education:

You can contact your school, college or university to obtain a letter from your head teacher or college principal confirming that you are in full time education.

This will be a group 2b document, at least one of your two remaining documents will need to be a Group 1 document.

If you are a refugee or asylum seeker:

We are unable to accept an Asylum Application Registration Card (ARC card).

These document may count as a Group 2b document:

  • A Section 4/95 Asylum support letter
  • Schedule 10 immigration bail support letter

At least one of your two remaining documents will need to be a Group 1 document.
