Imperial Health Charity is pleased to present Still Colour, a new installation designed by Chris Wood Light Studio.
Imperial Health Charity, in partnership with the Breast Services staff at Charing Cross
Hospital, approached Wood and her team in 2022 and commissioned them to produce a
bespoke design for the Breast Services Unit. The goal was to create an artwork that would
look visually impressive, but also offer some privacy for staff and patients in the unit.
This dynamic art installation celebrates the diverse spectrum of colours found in light. Chris
Wood is an accomplished light artist and the founder of Chris Wood Light Studio based in
Suffolk. She has earned recognition for her work on large-scale architectural projects and
site-specific installations, particularly in healthcare environments worldwide.

Still Colour features a hidden message within the arrangement of the lines of colour. This has
been achieved through translating text into binary code and using it to dictate the spacing
and arrangement of the two different blue and pink dichroic filters. Wood explains: “When
developing this new design we were drawn to the idea of a spectrum of colours coming
together as one to form white light, a symbol of strength, unity and diversity.”
Wood’s practice utilises a range of high and low-tech optical materials to harness patterns of
light that suggest ephemeral glimpsed moments in the natural world. Wood has been
developing her signature light responsive artworks for over 22 years, and is best known for
her work in a material called dichroic (‘two colour’). This colourless material filters and reflects
wavelengths of light producing a diverse spectrum of colours that change in response to the
view point. Focusing on the mathematical rules of pattern as her guiding framework, Wood
creates captivating visual experiences.
Imperial Health Charity would like to thank the team at Chris Wood Light for their support,
all those who have helped fund this wonderful installation, and the members of staff who
contributed their time to help shape this project.
