Imperial Health Charity is pleased to present Wondering Islands, a new commission by artist Cara Nahaul.
Cara explores ideas around memory and identity through her artwork, depicting landscapes
from travels around the world, including visits to her parents’ home countries of Malaysia and
Mauritius. Scenes of sun-drenched beaches and lush vegetation combined with an exciting
and vibrant use of colour have been selected to bring a freshness and brightness to the walls
of 8 South.
Cara worked with staff and the dementia care team to select a colour palette that would
invigorate the space. The blocks of rich maroon, peacock and azure blues as well as the
deep jade and bright yellow that punctuate the walls have been selected to create strong
interest particularly for patients with dementia who might struggle to discern more muted
tones.
Cara explains: "I wanted to create feelings of vibrancy and joy in the work, something that would stimulate the imagination for the viewer but also take them beyond their physical reality. The mural feels immersive, whilst the series of prints are installed at a specific height for patients to have quiet moments of reflection.
"I was drawn to using specific colours after discussing what would work best with the dementia care team, and the wall colours chosen for certain rooms subtly give a sense of peace and tranquility.”
