Volunteer Responder - Hospital wide

This role is available Monday-Friday between 10 and 5

This role is open to anyone aged 18 or over

What are we looking for?

We are looking for volunteers to join the team at CXH as part of our new flexible and exciting volunteering role. Our Volunteer Responders will get involved in multiple areas across the hospital, supporting our staff and patients by responding to a variety of requests

Why is this volunteer role so important?

This is an great opportunity to support our NHS staff at their busiest times. By completing important tasks, you will be helping to reduce delays and improve patient experience. 

What you will be doing

No two days will be the same, you'll always be busy completing some of the tasks below:

  • Purchasing Items from shops on behalf of patients 
  • Redirecting patients after ward moves or lift failures 
  • Collecting medication from the pharmacy 
  • Delivering blood samples to the lab 
  • Visiting lonely or confused patients on the ward
  • Escorting patients to tests or examinations
  • Helping with patient meal times
  • Helping patients with technology, such as Ipads

  • A friendly, positive and approachable manner
  • Ability to be empathetic, patient and calm in difficult situations if they arise
  • Ability to work well within a diverse team
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to act on own initiative
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Pro-active, respectful and attentive to patient and visitor needs
  • Physically able to be active and on your feet for a three hour shift
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including English language
  • Must be comfortable lifting and carrying (within manual handling training)
  • Commitment of one shift weekly for at least 6 months

Our volunteer appointment journey for this role

​​​​​​1. Complete the application below, via the start now button.

2. Attend an informal phone interview with the Programme Manager. The Programme Manager will be in touch to organise this. 

3. Find your ID documents for your DBS check - while you wait to hear back from us, please check that you have the required ID documents available, and in date, so that we can carry out a new DBS application for you. Check your documents here. We are unable to accept DBS certificates from other organisations. 

4. Submit your DBS application - once we receive your completed application we will contact you to arrange a time to complete your DBS application.

5. Complete your online volunteer core training and in person role specific training - after we’ve submitted your DBS application we’ll set you up on our online training system so you can work through and complete our online Volunteer Core Training. This will include a number of things to watch, read and do on-screen at your leisure so that you have all the key information you need to start volunteering.

6. Book your induction and shadow shift - once we have received your DBS disclosure and references and you have completed the online Volunteer Core Training we will be in touch so you can book your induction and shadow shift.

7. Book and attend your first shift - On your first shift, we will provide any uniform you require and will complete an onsite induction checklist to make sure you have all the information you need to get started.
