New neonatal and maternity equipment to support our youngest patients
Queen Charlotte's & Chelsea Hospital has purchased new equipment for its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), following a generous donation from Bukhman Philanthropies.

Bukhman Philanthropies is committed to creating meaningful change through its three focus areas: neonatal and maternal health, mental health and wellbeing, and literature.

Daria Bukhman, Co-Founder and Chair of Bukhman Philanthropies, said: “We believe that philanthropy plays a crucial role in supporting both mothers and babies, ensuring the best possible chances for survival and healthy outcomes in neonatal care.

“We are thrilled to work with Imperial Health Charity to support their NICUs — both by providing equipment and by funding vital research.''

Thanks to their remarkable gift, a range of neonatal equipment is now available for families at the hospital.

The team purchased a new Concord Birth Trolley, which can be equipped with everything needed to monitor and treat babies needing extra support in the moments immediately after birth. It allows care to be administered near the mother, with the benefit of keeping the umbilical cord intact.

The NICU has also bought three advanced ventilators. This equipment can be prioritised for babies who are extremely preterm and more likely to require ventilation. As the number of admissions of babies born at 22-24 weeks has increased, this equipment helps the team provide the very best respiratory care.

Bukhman Philanthropies’ gift will also support a new Research Fellowship study seeking to use new techniques to detect neurovascular complications in preterm and sick term-born babies.

Early detection is vital and can help prevent or manage long-term disabilities. We are so grateful to the Bukhman family for their support of this groundbreaking study and for funding the equipment to support this and further studies in neonatology.

Dr Aniko Deierl, Consultant and Head of Neonatology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “On behalf of the neonatal team, we are so grateful to Bukhman Philanthropies for supporting our vital work, caring for the most vulnerable babies in our hospitals.

“Our expert clinicians are there for families at one of the most difficult moments in their lives, and the benefit of having state-of-the-art equipment over and above what the NHS provides helps us offer the absolute best care when families need us most.”

Our maternity team across St Mary’s Hospital and Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital have also received new hospital-grade breast pumps to support new mothers wishing to breastfeed, through this donation.

A huge thank you to the Bukhman family and Bukhman Philanthropies for their incredible generosity.
